So, as part of one of my modules for uni this semester, myself and a group of my course mates have had to plan and design a magazine which fills a gap in the market.

Our magazine is called Blemish. It is a natural beauty, health and lifestyle magazine which aims to promote beauty in its natural form. No photoshopping, no shame.

We have noticed that most mainstream beauty and fashion magazines show models who fit into a very specific category – they tend to have what is seen as the ‘perfect’ figure, clear skin, and are generally seen as the ideals of beauty.

But do we really want to look at a woman like that and start to doubt ourselves for not meeting unrealistic expectations?

The average size for a 5’5 woman in the UK is a size 16, she’s a 36DD and has a 34′ waist. Yet models in ‘plus size’ clothing are often actually only a size 12 or 14.

Although we are starting to see changes in the industry such as plus size models on the runways and models boasting their natural beauty, there is still not enough and so many women feel unconfident and unhappy about the way they look.

One amazing character we are looking at is model Winnie Harlow who was on America’s Next Top Model in 2014. She suffers from a skin condition called Vitiligo which creates pale white patches on the skin – but she doesn’t suffer, she rocks it!

We want to ensure that women feel empowered by their imperfections and in this season’s issue we are focusing on everything from natural contraceptives to acne, Polycystic Ovaries (POS), to menstrual cups, Cruelty Free makeup to stretch marks.

We don’t want to say no to makeup, we know that we all love to put our face on in the morning and prep ourselves for the day ahead, but at Blemish we strive to empower women to feel just as brave after we’ve used that makeup wipe.

Stay Natural!
